World Computer Exchange, Inc. (WCE), a U.S. based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to reducing the digital divide for youth in developing countries. It does this through a global network of partners who work on the common cause to enhance the communities in their countries. WCE’s mission includes the promotion of responsible reuse of electronic equipment including the final disposal in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Peter H. Hellmonds was recently featured for his 25 years journey with WCE and his work on Advancing Digital Access. Beginning in 2001 with a project in Vietnam under the auspices of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Digital Divide Initiative, Peter helped shape the way WCE worked, moving beyond computer donations as the end in themselves, and reimagining the project into what WCE describes “a comprehensive education model” pairing schools with universities for teacher training and long-term sustainability. With that philosophy Peter influenced WCE’s work through the years.
Peter continued supporting WCE when in 2010 he joined WCE’s board of directors, where he served until 2023, including five years as chairman of the board. Peter continues to serve on WCE’s International Advisory Board since completing his maximum period of board appointments. During his board membership he guided WCE to expand their profile beyond merely donating computers. WCE now includes partners who responsibly recycle used computers.
